European-Spec A7 Crane Solution for the Civil Engineering Industry
In modern civil engineering, structural steel fabrication, and mining-related infrastructure projects, material handling systems have become a core part of production efficiency and operational safety. As projects grow larger and workshop layouts become more complex, overhead cranes are no longer auxiliary equipment—they are central to how fabrication and assembly workflows are executed.
This project showcases a long-term cooperation between Yuantai Crane and a South African engineering group specializing in civil engineering, structural design, steel detailing, concrete engineering, mining design, and industrial project management.
Following a successful initial supply of four single-girder overhead cranes, the client placed a repeat order for a more advanced configuration: four sets of 6+6 ton QDX European-type double girder overhead cranes, designed for high-duty continuous operation and multi-crane coordination environments.

Project Background – Heavy Engineering Client in South Africa
The client is a well-established engineering and design group in South Africa, with operations covering:
- Civil Engineering & Infrastructure Development
- Structural Steel Design and Draughting
- Steel Fabrication and Detailing
- Concrete Structural Engineering
- Mining Equipment Design Support
- Material Handling System Engineering
- Industrial Project Management
- Sheeting and Fabrication Solutions
Their workshops handle heavy steel structures, prefabricated components, and large-scale assemblies that require stable, precise, and high-frequency lifting operations.
As production demands increased, the existing lifting system needed an upgrade to support:
- Higher duty cycle operation
- Parallel crane operation within the same bay
- Improved positioning accuracy
- Enhanced safety control between multiple cranes
Based on a previous successful collaboration, Yuantai Crane was again selected to deliver a customized multi-crane runway solution.
Supplied Solution – QDX 6+6 Ton European overhead cranes
Yuantai Crane supplied four units of QDX European-style double girder overhead cranes, engineered for heavy-duty industrial fabrication and mining-related environments.
Main Technical Parameters
| Lifting Capacity | 6+6 tons (dual hoist trolleys per crane) |
| Span | 30.72 meters |
| Lifting Height | 15 meters |
| Duty Class | A7 (FEM 4M equivalent, heavy-duty continuous operation) |
| Power Supply | 400V / 50Hz / 3-phase |
| Hoist System | Dual European wire rope hoist trolleys |
| Lifting Speed | 1.2 / 7.4 m/min (dual-speed precision control) |
| Trolley Travel Speed | 4–40 m/min (VFD control) |
| Crane Travel Speed | 2.5–25 m/min (smooth acceleration/deceleration) |
| Protection Class | IP55 (dust and moisture resistant) |
| Control Mode | Cabin control + wireless remote control |
This configuration ensures both heavy lifting capacity and fine positioning control, which are critical in steel structure assembly and mining-related fabrication workflows.

Engineering Challenge – Dual Crane Operation on a Single Runway
A key feature of this project is the operational layout:
Each runway supports two overhead cranes operating simultaneously on the same span.
This configuration is widely used in large fabrication workshops, but it introduces complex engineering challenges:
- Risk of crane-to-crane collision
- Overlapping trolley movement zones
- Hook interference between dual hoist systems
- Coordination complexity between operators and control modes
To ensure safe and stable operation, a dedicated multi-layer safety system was designed and integrated into each crane.
Multi-Layer Safety System – Designed for High-Risk Multi-Crane Environments
1. Infrared Anti-Collision Protection
Each crane is equipped with an infrared detection system that continuously monitors the relative distance between cranes.
When two cranes approach the safety threshold, the system automatically:
- Reduces travel speed
- Activates warning signals
- Stops movement if necessary
This ensures controlled separation throughout operation.
2. Dual Hoist Interlocking System
Each crane is fitted with two independent 6-ton European hoist trolleys. To prevent operational conflict, a dedicated interlock system manages:
- Horizontal travel limits
- Vertical lifting boundaries
- Safe working envelope between two hooks
This avoids collisions between hoists and ensures stable load handling during dual lifting operations.
3. Cabin & Wireless Remote Control Interlock
To prevent conflicting commands, the control system includes:
- Priority switching between the cabin and the remote control
- Single-source operation lock
- Automatic override prevention logic
At any given moment, only one control source is active, ensuring operational clarity and safety.
4. Emergency Stop Safety Network
Emergency stop systems are distributed across:
- Operator cabin
- Ground maintenance access points
- Wireless remote control system
All E-stop signals are integrated into a unified safety circuit, enabling immediate shutdown in emergency conditions.
Engineering Value – Why A7 Duty Class Matters
This project is designed under A7 duty classification, representing one of the highest working standards for industrial overhead cranes.
In practical terms, this means:
- Continuous high-frequency lifting cycles
- Heavy-load structural fatigue resistance
- High thermal stability of motors and gear systems
- Reinforced structural design for long service life
- Suitable for intensive fabrication and mining operations
For the client’s engineering and industrial workflow, the A7 duty overhead crane ensures long-term stable performance under demanding production schedules.
Factory Testing & Third-Party Inspection
Before shipment, all four double trolley overhead cranes underwent full Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), including:
- Full-load lifting performance tests
- Crane travel and trolley motion verification
- Dual crane synchronization testing
- Anti-collision and interlock system validation
- Electrical insulation and protection checks
In addition, a third-party inspection agency appointed by the client conducted independent verification at the Yuantai Crane manufacturing facility.
Inspection scope included:
- Structural welding quality (NDT testing)
- Dimensional accuracy of 30.72m span
- Electrical system stability and logic verification
- Load-bearing performance validation
All systems passed inspection successfully, and the client confirmed full compliance with technical and safety requirements.
On-Site Installation & Engineering Support
To ensure smooth commissioning, Yuantai Crane will dispatch experienced engineers to the client’s project site upon arrival. As this is a repeat cooperation project, the client was offered preferential installation support terms as part of our long-term partnership arrangement.
On-site services include:
- Structural installation and girder alignment
- Rail system calibration
- Electrical system commissioning
- Anti-collision and interlock system testing
- Operator training and maintenance guidance
This ensures the crane system can be safely and efficiently integrated into production from day one.

Why Choose European-Style Overhead Cranes
For South African civil engineering, structural steel fabrication, and mining-related facilities, European-style overhead cranes are increasingly preferred due to their adaptability across crane types and their ability to meet high-duty industrial requirements (including A5–A7 applications).
Key advantages include:
- Optimized structural design with lower dead weight and reduced runway load
- Suitable for both single-girder and double-girder crane configurations
- Stable performance under high-duty working classes such as A7 / FEM 4M
- High-precision motion control with VFD-driven hoisting and traveling systems
- Better suitability for large-span workshop layouts and multi-crane runway systems
- Enhanced safety integration for coordinated or simultaneous crane operations
- Lower long-term maintenance demand and improved lifecycle efficiency
