
Yuantai Crane recently completed a 5 ton European single girder gantry crane project for a customer in Poland. The crane was designed with a 16 m clear span and 5.2 m cantilevers extending beyond both sides, giving the structure a total span of 26.4 m.
A European industrial customer required the gantry crane for outdoor material handling around a large working area. The existing lifting arrangement could not provide enough coverage, especially when loads needed to be moved close to the edges of the working zone.
Instead of a standard cantilever gantry crane with limited coverage, the customer needed a solution that made better use of the available space while keeping the main lifting area unobstructed.
After reviewing the site layout and lifting requirements, we developed a 5 ton gantry crane with extended cantilevers on both sides. This configuration allowed the crane to cover a wider working area without significantly increasing the overall crane span.
Customer's Coverage Problem
For an industrial material handling area, the crane runway does not always correspond exactly to the area where loads need to be picked up or delivered. Materials may be stored beside the main working zone, temporary staging areas may be located outside the runway, and vehicles may need to be positioned close to the crane for loading and unloading.
In this project, the customer required a 16 m clear working span, but the required lifting coverage extended beyond the two supporting legs. Simply increasing the main span would not necessarily be the most efficient way to address this requirement.
The design therefore needed to balance two different requirements:
- Maintain a 16 m clear span for the main working area.
- Extend the hook's available working range toward both sides of the runway.
This is where the cantilever configuration became an important part of the overall crane design.
Why 16 m + 5.2 m × 2 Cantilever?
The gantry crane was designed with a 5.2 m cantilever on each side of the 16 m clear span.
The basic structural arrangement is:
5.2 m cantilever + 16 m clear span + 5.2 m cantilever = 26.4 m total span
The purpose of this arrangement is not simply to make the crane larger. It is to make better use of the available working space around the runway.
The central 16 m section can serve the main lifting and handling area, while the two 5.2 m extensions provide additional reach toward the sides.
Depending on the site layout, these extended areas can be used for:
- Outdoor material storage
- Temporary material staging
- Production-related handling
- Finished product handling
- Truck loading and unloading
- Material areas located along the edge of a workshop or yard
This approach gives the crane a wider working envelope without requiring the main supporting structure and runway to cover the full 26.4 m width. For industrial facilities where material is positioned on both sides of the main crane operating area, a double-cantilever gantry crane can therefore be a practical alternative to simply increasing the main span.

The 0.8/5.0 m/min dual hoisting speed provides both slower positioning and faster lifting when appropriate. The hoist travelling and gantry travelling speeds are both variable, from 2.0 to 20 m/min, giving the operator greater flexibility when moving loads around the working area.
Both pendant control and radio remote control are provided. This allows the operator to select the control method that best suits the lifting task and observation position.
The A5 working class was selected for regular industrial material handling. As with other European crane projects, the working class should be matched to the actual load spectrum and operating frequency rather than determined by lifting capacity alone.
Application in Outdoor Material Handling
A cantilever crane with this configuration can be particularly useful in outdoor industrial areas where several material handling functions need to be covered by one lifting system.
For example, a manufacturing or fabrication facility may have a central working area between the crane legs, with materials stored or vehicles positioned outside the main span.
The 16 m central section provides the primary lifting area, while the cantilevers extend the hook's reach toward the surrounding spaces.
This makes the configuration suitable for applications such as steel fabrication yards, machinery manufacturing facilities, industrial storage areas, prefabricated component yards, and outdoor loading zones.
The 4.71 m lifting height also fits applications where materials are mainly stored, transferred and loaded at relatively low or medium heights rather than lifted into a high-bay storage system.
The actual application depends on the customer's site layout and load requirements, but the project demonstrates how a European gantry crane can be configured around a specific outdoor working area rather than selected only from standard span and capacity combinations.
