Executive Summary
When a prominent industrial machinery fabricator in Santiago, Chile, expanded its high-precision mold assembly operations, it faced a material handling challenge. The project required a 3 ton overhead crane system with controlled positioning, reliable electrical operation, and a practical approach to international shipping.
To reduce the cost and volume of shipping a complete crane structure, Yuantai Crane supplied a European single girder overhead crane Kit (SKD Solution). The package included a pair of end carriages, a dual-speed electric chain hoist, dual control systems, C-track festooning, conductor busbar and other key components, while the client fabricated the main girder locally based on Yuantai's drawings.
This approach allowed the customer to combine locally fabricated structural steel with key crane components supplied by Yuantai Crane.

The Operational Challenge & Logistical Hurdle
Precision mold assembly requires controlled material handling. Machining dies and injection molds can weigh several tons and have high replacement costs, so smooth lifting and positioning are important when placing an upper die plate onto alignment pins.
The Chilean client was preparing a workshop bay with a 12-meter span and 6-meter hook height. A complete overseas crane would also require the main steel girder to be transported internationally.
The project therefore involved three main considerations:
Prohibitive Ocean Freight Costs:
Shipping a 12-meter steel main girder from China would add considerable volume and weight to the shipment. The client already had local steel fabrication capability, making local girder fabrication a more practical option.
Positioning Accuracy:
Mold assembly requires controlled lifting and travel speeds. A dual-speed hoist was selected to provide a slower speed for positioning operations.
Reliable Operation:
The crane would be used in a production environment, so the client required a reliable power supply and multiple control options for daily operation.
The Yuantai Solution: Modular European Crane Kit
Since the client could fabricate the main girder locally, Yuantai Crane proposed an OEM Crane Kit strategy (SKD).

Instead of shipping the complete structural crane, Yuantai supplied the key mechanical and electrical components together with the main girder manufacturing drawings. This allowed the client to manufacture the steel structure locally while keeping the main lifting and travel components as a single, matched crane system.
1. Micro-Speed Hoisting for Delicate Mold Alignment
To meet the positioning requirements of mold assembly, Yuantai supplied a dual-speed electric chain hoist.
| Function | Speed | Application |
| Fast lifting | 5.4 m/min | Normal lifting and lowering |
| Creep lifting | 1.8 m/min | Mold positioning and alignment |
| Trolley travel | 3/11 m/min | Controlled cross travel and faster positioning |
The slower 1.8 m/min lifting speed allows the operator to make more controlled movements when positioning molds on machining beds or aligning components.
The compact chain hoist configuration also provides a relatively small hook approach dimension, helping make better use of the available working space.
2. Redundant Control Architecture: Pendant + Wireless Remote
The crane was supplied with two independent control options:
Radio Remote Control
- Allows the operator to move around the work area.
- Provides a better viewing position when handling large molds.
- Helps the operator check clearances during positioning.
- Suspended from a dedicated festoon track along the crane bridge.
- Provides a wired control option for daily operation.
- Can be used when the radio remote is unavailable or requires maintenance.
This dual-control arrangement gives the customer greater flexibility during mold handling and workshop operations.
3. Power Supply Systems for Trolley and Long Travel
The 3 ton crane uses separate power supply arrangements for trolley and long travel movements.
Trolley Power: C-Track Festoon System
The C-track system guides the flat cable as the hoist trolley moves along the bridge. It provides an organized cable arrangement and helps reduce cable interference during repeated trolley movement.
Long Travel Power: Conductor Busbar
For crane long travel, Yuantai supplied a continuous conductor busbar system along the runway. The conductor system provides power to the traveling crane through current collectors.
The busbar components can also be packed efficiently with the other crane kit components, helping simplify overseas transportation.
4. End Trucks with Soft-Start Drives
The kit includes precision-machined end carriages with drive units, bearings and buffer stops.
The travel system uses soft-start characteristics to provide smoother acceleration and deceleration along the runway. This helps reduce sudden movement and lateral loads on the crane structure during travel.

Implementation & Local Manufacturing Support
A key part of this overhead crane kit project in Chile was the coordination between Yuantai's supplied components and the customer's local fabrication capability.
Yuantai provided:
Complete Fabrication Drawings
Structural drawings and connection details for the 12-meter main girder, allowing the customer to fabricate the beam locally using available steel materials.
Pre-Wired Electrical System
The electrical panel and wiring were prepared according to the crane configuration, with clearly identified terminals and English/Spanish electrical documentation.
Pre-Shipment Testing
The supplied hoist and end trucks were inspected and tested at the factory before packing and shipment.
After arrival at the Port of Valparaíso, the client used local steel materials to fabricate the main girder according to Yuantai's drawings. The crane was then assembled with the supplied end trucks, hoist and electrical components.
Project Results
The SKD approach helped the customer reduce the amount of structural steel shipped internationally while maintaining the required crane configuration.
65% Savings on Logistics
By opting for a bridge crane kit rather than a fully fabricated crane, ocean freight costs were reduced by nearly two-thirds, keeping total capital expenditure well within budget.
30% Faster Mold Setup
The combination of 1.8 m/min creep hoisting speed and dual-speed trolley travel cut mold alignment times significantly while reducing the risk of tool impact during assembly.
Uninterrupted Operations
The dual-control setup and seamless conductor rail have delivered 100% operational uptime since commissioning in Santiago.
Enhanced Safety Standard
Wireless operation allows personnel to remain outside load drop zones during heavy lifts, supporting safer material handling in the workshop.
